EBC Breakfast

We went to the East Brunswick Club (EBC) with Troy and Bec when I was still eating gluten. EBC is an omni pub with has been doing a large variety of vegan options for a while, including the famous vegan parma which apparently Pink ordered. They started doing breakfast recently which Vicki has blogged about twice.

I couldn't resist the Elvis pancakes, with fake bacon, peanut butter, maple syrup, banana and ice cream. Crazy right? But keep in mind that they don't open til 12 so it's really lunch! Excuse the blurry phone pics!

The fake bacon went surprisingly well with the sweet pancakes, I suspect because they fried it with maple syrup. I loved this, but it did make me feel quite sick at the end. That might have been all of the sugar or all of the gluten or both. I'm glad I got to try it though. The pancake texture was awesome, I really need to perfect gluten free pancakes!

Toby tried the big vegan breakfast, which included scrambled tofu, fake bacon, tomatoes, mushrooms and spinach and some toast. The tofu was quite garlicky but we enjoyed it. Size wise though it was disappointing, it wasn't really big at all.

Troy got the breakfast parma which comes with scrambled tofu, bacon, tomato and chips and salad on the side. He enjoyed it and allowed us to pinch some of his chips.

I wanted to get this post done today because I want to start the new year with this blog being mostly gluten free. We will no longer post gluteny recipes or dishes we make at home since our home will thankfully be g/f. So the only gluteny dishes featured will be the occasional ones Toby samples when we go out.

Mankoushe - Vegan Mofo Day 26

Falafel is an amazing fast food.  It is delicious, cheap and relatively healthy. I like it simple: three or four falafel balls wrapped in pita bread with lettuce, tomatoes, pickles and tahini.  I also prefer the the Egyptian fava beans falafel from Half Moon cafe to the Lebanese style ones.

Couple of months ago, I read about a new Lebanese bakery called Mankoushe on Mess+Noise . Before I had a chance to blog about it, Cindy and Michael had already given them raving reviews, not once but twice.

My friend's band YIS eat there every week before band practice.  Bassist Bronwyn (a fellow Egyptian falafel fan and ex-chef) gave their food two thumbs up and said "the zaatar bread was almost as good as my grandmother's".  You can also read frontman Simon's review on their blog.

We went on Saturday night with Lisa, she got the Za'atar extra - Za'atar with salad and mint on top. It's not as oily as the usual one, it's wholesome and the mint makes it refreshing.

We also ordered the stretched Za'atar.  It was similar to normal Za'atar but much crispier.

K and I shared the spinach triangle which is the best spinach triangle I have ever had. The dough is superior to places like A1 and Tabet's.

The falafel roll was fantastic and filling. Their falafel balls are chunkier than normal Lebanese falafel and almost as good as Half Moon's. The pita bread is made to order just like all their baked goods.  Their falafel rolls are massive and "normal" people, unlike me, can only eat half of them.

Mankoushe is like the cool little cousin of Tabet's and A1.  We were served by the young Lebanese hipster in a stylish op-shop outfit and they played great music on the stereo. They were playing The Rolling Stone's Sympathy for the Devil and Bob Dylan's Ballad Of A Thin Man really loud when we were there.

New Day Rising

After Lisa tweeted about the 'CLT' and vegan scones at New Day Rising, our problem of where to eat brunch on Sat was solved. New Day Rising is a tiny veg cafe that I blogged a vague description of here. Their menu seemed to have changed slightly although still mostly resolves around various toast/bagel options. I was intrigued by the CLT ($10), and couldn't resist trying it. The 'C' actually stands for coconut, which is marinated and smoked with what I imagine to be loads of liquid smoke. It is served with rocket, avocado and tomato on a bagel. I think they deserve double points for this original idea and I really enjoyed the smokey coconut, it almost felt like I was eating mock meat with a slight coconut flavour. Toby said that he wasn't sure he was sold on the combination, although I can't help wondering if it was the lack of protein.

The other dish that we shared was the special: corn tortillas, corn cakes, black beans and avocado salsa. It normally comes with cheese but they veganised it by omitting it. It was really filling and very tasty. The corn cakes provided a nice crunchy addition. They can't quite compete to Trippy Taco, but who can?

We also took home a piece of vegan banana bread. It was delicious but contained raisins which had me convinced that maybe it was a tad too healthy for me :-)

Also, they had a little thing on the bottom of the menu which states 'gluten freedom on all items- $1'. Great to have more vegan gluten free options available!

Half True Cat Food posted a pic of their menu here and of course Three Thousand blogged about it when it first opened.

Me, The Tobinator And The Boys' Night Out

I went to Critical Mass last night while Kristy, Steph, Pip, S-J and the gang were enjoying the yummy Vegetarian Vietnamese food in St Albans. I was there at 17:30 and there were no cyclists in sight. I thought it was cancelled but "the mass" finally showed up around six. The bikes were cool and the people were friendly. It kind of put me off when a cyclist was drinking a beer while riding though.

We finally started riding around 18:30. A lady asked me if my name is Toby. I said yes. The "The Tobinator" sticker on my bike must have given it away.

I was enjoying the ride but 2 minutes in I've got a call. Button The Bird Slayer was outside the house and I had to go home to take her back inside. Okay, goodbye Critical Mass, I will see you in December.

So I ended up having dinner with Craig at East Brunswick Club. The menu has changed. Vegan Parma is $12 everyday (but smaller) and they now serve Funky Pies with a side of Salad. They also have Mountain Goat Steam Ale on tap.

Craig and I both ordered the amazing Vegan Philly Cheese Steak and a pint of Steam Ale. The Cheese Steak was awesome as usual. The new beer Steam Ale is kinda like the Indian Pale Ale they used to make but yummier.

Talking about about EBC. CURSE ov DIALECT is having their album launch there at 20th Nov and Why?, the only non-hiphop act under Anticon label, will be there for their Meredith side show. I am giving Why? a miss because we will be overseas. Be quick, my friends. Tickets will be sold out in no time.

We recently rode to ceres for breakfast. Ceres is positioned right next to the gorgeous merri creek bike track.
Ceres stands for center for education and research on environmental strategies. It is pronounced "series". There is a cafe there, small nursery, market on sat, community garden and much more. It really does feel a lot like a hippy place, but I love it.

Anyway this is for Aussie/NZ vegan mofo (month of food) so I better get to the food. We shared an almond muffin:

Pumpkin, tofu and miso rolland vegan breakfast which contained toast, mushrooms, spinach, smoked tofu, baked beans, and beetroot and chili relish. The smoked tofu was definitely my fav part, but I really enjoyed the beetroot relish too.

It was all delicious, and I especially enjoyed the vegan breakfast but at $17 it's pretty expensive for breakfast and really not that big for it's price.
