Bars, Pubs, and Taverns Welcome Customers and Offer Alcoholic Drinks (Jhon Smith Ben)

A common social practice is to go out for drinks with your friends. There are wide varieties of venues where you can get alcoholic drinks, sit and listen to music, or just enjoy the company of your peers. These venues have a specialized counter called "the bar," where a bartender and his helper work on preparing cocktails and pouring wine and beer. The "back bar" is an area behind the bartender that has the liquor stock and glassware. Many bars are highly decorated and very ornate. Others are understated. But all bars serve alcoholic beverages that are commonly known as drinks.

Tables, chairs, and stools at high counters provide seating for customers. Couples or a single individual are welcome to sit at the bar to enjoy their drinks and the company of others seated nearby. Large groups can sit at a table or in a booth. Depending on the size and layout of the bar or pub, cocktail waitresses serve the drinks that the bartender has made. Occasionally, in a smaller tavern, the bartender does the serving.

Bar patrons may find themselves enjoying drinks in a myriad of surroundings. Dive bars, for instance, are usually frequented by local people who are only interested in getting an alcoholic beverage with their friends. Neighborhood bars may serve drinks to the same patrons nearly every night of the week. Other bars feature live music, along with the drinks. These bars frequently implement a cover charge or have a minimum drink purchase requirement. The cover charge is usually used to pay the live musicians; however, they gratefully accept tips, as well. Other pubs and taverns have DJs who play recorded music. Usually, a bar comes to be known for the type of music it plays. Some of these bars may have a small dance floor, but the focus of the business is serving alcoholic drinks. Cocktail lounges are frequently found in hotels and restaurants.

In many cities, laws are in place that prohibit minor children from entering an establishment that serves alcoholic drinks. Zoning and legal restrictions may state where these establishments can be located within a city or town. Some communities place restrictions on what type of alcohol can be served to patrons. For instance, wine bars can only serve wine and drinks that have an alcohol percentage not greater than wine. Many wine bars are quite elegant and most are quiet. Wine bars may offer a small tasting menu, with food selected to be paired with certain wines. Beer is served, almost exclusively, at beer pubs or small microbreweries. A person looking to have a drink made with vodka or Scotch would probably not go into a microbrewery for a drink. Many microbreweries and brewpubs serve food, as well.

Drinks have become very sophisticated, with cocktails coming in a wide variety of flavors. A cocktail is sometimes defined as an alcoholic spirit mixed with soda or fruit juice and served with fruit or herbs. Ingenious new concoctions arrive on the scene from time to time. Bartenders who experiment with flavors, mixers, and ingredients are now called mixologists. The techniques and recipes are known as mixology. In large urban areas, customers become familiar with what kinds of cocktails a certain mixologist or bar generally serves. For instance, martini bars are popular and the list of martini types is seemingly endless. Bartenders invent new combinations and offer them to their customers. The ones that taste good become popular; the drinks that don't are usually not seen again.

Drinks are not only varied, but so is the glassware in which they are served. For instance, fine red wines are ideally served in a balloon-shaped crystal glass. White wine glasses are more vertically shaped. Champagne flutes are designed to keep the bubbles in the glass until the wine is consumed. Martini glasses, highball glasses, pilsner glasses, beer steins, glasses specifically designed for ales or porters, and many others grace the back bars of nearly every establishment where drinks are sold.

Drinks have a long and colorful history. Some have been used for medicinal purposes. Others were invented in celebration of an important date or event. But the idea of going out for drinks remains a constant.

Green Smoothies and Hemp Truffles

About a fortnight ago when we got our first taste of spring , I felt inspired and energised to be healthier. While the weather quickly went back to being miserable with only a few good days inbetween. I've kept up some good habits. I'm still eating some junk particularly at the potluck yesterday but I feel that at least I start the days on a good start by having a green smoothie for breakfast. I started out with:

Classic Green Smoothie from Oh She Glows:

Yield: 1 serving/2 cups
Ingredients:
  • 1 cup almond milk, or milk of choice
  • 1 ripe banana, preferably peeled + frozen
  • 2 handfuls organic spinach or 1 handful kale
  • 1 tbsp chia seeds OR 1 tbsp ground flax
  • 1 tbsp nut butter, optional
  • 1-3 ice cubes
  • protein powder of choice, optional

Directions: Starting with the liquid, add in 1 cup of milk of your choice. Now add in the chia or flax and nut butter. Next, add in the spinach followed by the banana on top. Blend until smooth. Add in your ice cubes and blend some more. Serves 1- about 2 cups.

This was great, I skipped the ice and the protein powder. You can't taste the baby spinach at all, so its a great way to start. It didn't quite fill me up.  But I've found that if I increase almond milk to about 1&1/4 cup and increase the seeds or nut butter slightly then I'm right to lunch time.

I've slowly been making more adaptions using frozen bluberries, cherries, raspberries and using kale and boy choy (yes sounds gross but again can't taste it), I've also used hemp seeds too.

I'm not a morning person at all, so I put it in my klean canteen bottle and drink it on the way to work. Be warned if you do this to rinse it out straight away. I once left my bottle dirty until I got home which was a big mistake-smell wise. I do need to floss at work now though unless I start getting up earlier and having it at home.

I recently bought some hemp seeds which are supposadly good for you. I'm always suck a sucker for the latest 'superfood'.  This US study suggests a range of benefits like high in omega 3 and 6, and may lower cholestrol and blood pressure. They are actually legal to eat everywhere except for australia and new zealand. So they are sold as a skincare product in some larger health food stores. See below:

I'm also been making a few different versions of these raw truffles so if I do get hungry before lunch I eat a couple. This is my favourite, its slightly sweet and Toby who hates these sort of raw snacks loves these (and not just for the high protein).

Hemp Truffles adapted from the raw project
  • 1 cups shelled hemp seeds
  • 1/2 cup chia seeds
  • 2 tbsp. almond butter
  • 1 cup pitted dates
  • 1/8 cup cacao powder
  • 1/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 teaspoons vanilla
  • 1 teaspoon maple syrup
Place hemp seeds, chia seeds, almond butter, cacao powder, and salt into a food processor and process until well blended. While processing, feed in pitted dates and process until the mixture is well blended and clumping. Add in vanilla and maple syrup. Roll mixture into small, quarter-sized balls and enjoy. Makes about 15 balls.

 I love these type of recipes, if you have any similar recipes please let me know.

They both may look gross but taste great!

Chamomile Lemon Iced Tea with Maple Ice Cubes- Vegan Mofo Day 2

I kind of felt bad for making such an easy dessert for the potluck so I also made this drink which was suprisingly enjoyed by the toddlers, who knew that toddlers loved lemony things so much?

Chamomile Lemon Iced Tea I doubled and adapted this recipe from whole family fare:
1/2 cup dried chamomile flowers (or 3-4 tea bags) (I used the teabags)
juice of 1 lemon plus a few extra lemon slices
4 cups  water

Boil water.  Remove from heat and add the chamomile flowers and lemon juice. Let sit for 10-20 minutes. Remove tea bags or strain flowers and refrigerate until it cools.

Serves 4

Maple Ice Cubes

100 ml water
100 ml maple syrup

Mix water into maple syrup and then pour into a ice cube tray and freeze.

The ice cubes were so easy to make and I can't resist different ice cube ideas, remember the mint ones? But it might be easier taste wise to just add maple syrup to the tea so you can adjust according to preference and then add regular ice cubes, but where would be the fun in that?

Add ice cubes to tea right before serving.

It was quite refreshing and not overly sweet. I personally think it could do with a bit more maple syrup or agave but then I have a major sweet teeth, so adjust accordingly.

Also to celebrate vegan mofo I spend this week working on a recipe index, which was such a long irritating process. Go check it out at the top of my page. Thanks to Carla and Johanna for pointing me in the right direction with the anchors!

BBQ potluck

We hosted a BBQ potluck today, except there was only 2 things actually put on the BBQ so maybe we should call it a picnic potluck. I ate a ridiculous amount of food, in true potluck form and had fun chatting with everyone. Thanks for a great day!

I made mint ice cubes, simply add mint to ice cube trays, add water and freeze, don't they look pretty?
Which I put in pomegranate lemonade, it was pretty watered down and subtle, no way near as sweet as lemonade I normally made. But great for washing down food to allow more room in my belly. Pomegrante Lemonade recipe from here, I made a double batch and everyone seemed to think it was iced tea:

Ingredients

* 3 tablespoons sugar
* 1/4 cup fresh lemon juice
* 1 cup pomegranate juice
* 2 1/2 cups water
* Crushed ice

Preparation

1. Combine sugar and lemon juice. Stir well to dissolve.

2. Pour lemon mixture and pomegranate juice into a pitcher, and stir well.

3. Add 2 1/2 cups water.

4. Add crushed ice as needed to each glass.

and cheesecake. I had big issues with this, because I combined two different recipes and probably used the wrong side dish too, so ended up with loads of crust and hardly any actual cheesecake filling. To make up for it, I added a whole jar of jam mixed with lemon juice and some blueberry glaze. The excess fruit overpowered the tiny cheesecake part which is a shame because surprisingly the MILLET filling worked quite well and it was actually gluten free.

Crust recipe is from Manifest Vegan:

* 2 cups almonds
* 1 cup dried Medjool dates

To make crust:

Blend almonds and dates in a food processor until finely chopped. Press mixture very compactly into the bottom of a spring-form pan. I copied her and used the bottom of a glass to press the crust down.

The millet type 'teasecake' is from the ultimate uncheese cookbook but it got it from vegalicious:

the filling:

* 1/2 c. uncooked millet
* 2 c. water
* 1/2 c. raw cashews
* 1/3 c. lemon juice
* 1/3 c. agave or maple syrup
* 2 tsp. vanilla extract
* 1 tsp. lemon extract (I didn't use it)

For the filling:

1. Bring the millet to boil in a small saucepan with a tight fitting lid.
2. Once the millet is boiling, turn the heat down to simmer and cook with the lid on until the liquid is absorbed, this will be 30-40 minutes longer. I did not peek, but until after 30 minutes, and the millet was done.
3. Meanwhile, puree the cashew nuts, with the lime juice, syrup and vanilla. I used my blender. Puree until it is a very smooth creamy liquid.
4. When the millet is done, add millet and blend as creamy as you can get it.
5. Sample the mixture and adjust according to your taste. You may want it a bit sweeter, or more of a citrus flavor, however I found it perfect and not needing any adjustment.
6. Allow the millet mixture to slightly cool.
7. Once your crust has cooled, pour into the crust and allow to sit for 30 min at room temperature.
8. Refrigerate for at least 4 hours before serving.

Toby made the ultimate BBQ tofu from vegan dad which is a version of the same tofu that he made for another BBQ potluck, we ran out of time to freeze it though. I enjoyed this but possibly not as much as last time we made it.

sauce:
- 1/4 cup margarine
- 1 sweet onion, sliced
- 3 cloves of garlic, chopped
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 cup ketchup
- 1/3 cup maple syrup
- 1/3 cup brown sugar
- 1 tbsp vegan Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tbsp mustard
- few dashes of hot sauce

1. Melt margarine in a saucepan over medium heat. Saute onion and garlic for 15 mins, until onions have cooked down and are nicely browned
2. Add the remaining ingredients and bring to bubbling. Simmer for 15-20 mins, until sauce thickens and gets a nice deep red colour.

Putting it together:
- 1 pkg firm or extra firm tofu, sliced into 8
- 1 recipe Sweet and Sticky BBQ sauce (but finely dice the onions)

METHOD
1. Bring ingredients for BBQ sauce to bubbling in a saucepan. Add tofu, then reduce heat and simmer, uncovered, for 10 mins.
2. Remove tofu and place in a Pyrex dish. Cover with sauce, cover, and place in the freezer. Let freeze completely.
3. The day before you want to eat said tofu, place in the fridge to thaw. Or, just thaw in the microwave before grilling.
4. Grill tofu on a hot grill 3-4 mins per side, then rotating 90 degrees and repeating. Baste regulalry with the BBQ sauce. If you like, set aside some sauce and thicken in a saucepan on the stove, then slather over the grilled tofu.

Sarah and Adam made vanilla cupcakes with chocolate icing:

Anikee brought along this salad which was made by Raq but hardly got eaten because we were so full by that stage.

Eat More Vegies blogger made this yummy fudge:

and lemony asparagus risoni salad which was perfect summer/spring food:

Keira made lemon cheesecake with proper cheesecake to crust ratio, which was very lemony (in a good way) and kind of refreshing.:

Shawna made this healthy but yummy coriander rice/bean salad:

Zac made chocolate peanut things which were filled with peanut butter and extra peanuts, so good:

Cindy made vanilla slice which I think stole the show:

Michael made Kentucky BBQ ribz which surprisingly didn't kill me and tasted great, Toby said this was his favourite dish:

Lisa made chocolate mocha cupcakes:

Fat fueled vegan blogger made corn bread which was slightly sweet but savoury, and crumbed tofu with tartare sauce which I didn't get a photo of but loved:

Craig made curried pasta salad, the curry powder went surprisingly well with pasta salad:

and extra crunchy roasted potatoes:

Bec and Troy made mini tacos with homemade corn tortillas which were inspired from these tacos and were held together with toothpicks and rosewater and pistachio cupcakes. Both were awesome:

Erin
made grilled kabobs which I think were from this recipe , she used rosemary branches in place of skewers which i think is genius:

which was served with muhammara sauce:

which we brushed on with the cutest brush:

Also not pictured but equally tasty: Danni's pizza slices, Jo's salad and Johanna's salad.

If I have forgotten something or someone or gotten something wrong please correct me, I look forward to seeing lots of the recipes posted on your blogs people.

G/F Potluck and Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream

I can't believe it has taken me so long to blog about this potluck, but I have had a few distractions like getting super close to handing in my thesis and trying to put together a journal article submission, finishing up at two different offices (I've got a new job) and of course doing all of the cooking/housework, I miss your cooking Toby! To say things have been hectic would be an understatement. I'm also trying to complete the couch to 5km running plan, anyway enough whinging, just please excuse me if I'm not super attentive to your blogs for a little while.

Anyway, the potluck was awesome, it was so good to be able to eat everything and I didn't get sick afterward so no-one accidentally poisoned me :-) Several of the bloggers have already blogged about it including: Steph (twice), Cindy, Michael, Vicki (twice) and Johanna. As many of the other potluckers have pointed out, the original theme was cheese but changed to gluten free when I tested positive to coeliacs disease but some people did both themes.

I made blueberry iced rooiboss tea

Toby made goats cheese from vegan soiree, I've never had goats cheese before, but didn't like this at all, it was too sour for my liking. The texture was more like a loaf as a few people commented.

To make up for it, I tried to make another 'cheese' using this recipe from rawmazing at the last minute. This also didn't work out very well either, but I didn't soak the cashews.
The one dish that I was proud of was the blueberry cheesecake ice cream, the recipe is from a vegan ice cream paradise and was thick creamy and pretty damn yummy:

Blueberry Cheesecake Ice Cream

2 c. Silk soy creamer (I used soy milk)
1 c. vegan cream cheese
¾ c. sugar
1 T. lemon juice
½ c. soy milk
2 T. arrowroot
1 t. vanilla

1 c. blueberries (fresh or frozen)
1/8 c. sugar
splash lemon juice

Combine soy creamer, cream cheese, sugar, and lemon juice in a saucepan. Heat and mix contents. It will take some whisking to break up the cream cheese and get it to dissolve. While heating, combine the ½ cup soy milk and 2 tablespoons arrowroot and set aside. Once the pan’s contents are boiling, take from heat and add soy milk–arrowroot mixture. The liquid should thicken quickly. Add vanilla extract. Set aside to cool.

Combine blueberries, sugar, and lemon juice in a small saucepan. Heat until boiling and some blueberries have burst. Set aside to cool.

Freeze cream cheese mixture according to ice cream maker instructions. Add blueberries 5 minutes before end of freezing cycle.
Now on to the other dishes.

There was so many dishes I didn't get pics of like the caramel slice, that was so amazing and Steph's delicious nacho cheese dip because I was too busy eating and eating and eating and eating. Thanks everyone for making it an inclusive potluck for me, it meant a lot!
