Mercy Seat

I think it's easy being vegan, its a bit more difficult being gluten free and vegan though. Particularly as not all veg*n restaurants cater for us gluten free folks and sometimes the 1-2 options are bland and just not worth it. Excellent in Portland which seems to be the best place in the world for us gleegans. There have been a couple of new veg*n cafes which have opened recently in Melbourne which have 0 gluten free options.  In my previous gluten eating days I would have rushed out to support the new veg businesses but simply haven't been able to which makes me a tad sad. Mercy Seat was among them, but they announced on Friday night that they had gluten free bread so I rushed out the next day with Cindy and Michael to try what others have been raving about. Mercy Seat is a vegetarian breakfast/lunch place which is situated at a bar called 99 problems.

I had the scrambled tofu with avocado on gluten free bread. The scrambled tofu doesn't contain any soy sauce which I was thankful for since it generally means that I can't eat it. Instead it was fried with spinach, red onions, and plenty of spices. I could see the tumeric and they are a tad spicy from what what I suspect to be cayenne pepper.  It was delicious and very filling. Also excellent value for $10, not sure how much extra it was for gf toast. The rest of the smallish menu looks pretty gluten heavy with burgers, vegan philly cheese steak etc but I suspect that the avocado with vegan feta is also gf if served on gf toast. I just hope that they are not using the kolios greek fasting feta which is not actually vegan. We will certainly go back to try more.

They also had home made lemonade on the specials board, I was surprised to find that it was carbonated rather than American style lemonade but it was just as refreshing served with mint.

Toby thought his long black was very delicious. They use padre coffee.

Coffee: My Drug of Choice II

It's been more than one year since I blogged about coffee. Melbournians now have many more specialty cafes to choose from.

St Ali has opened Sensory Lab in the heart of the city and Outpost on the wrong side of the river, both are open SEVEN days a week.   Seven Seeds also opened De Clieu on Gertrude St.  According to the review on The Age, they even have a gluten-free vegan option.

Melbourne's best coffee chain Cafenatics also opened a specialty coffee joint called Eclipse in the city.  It is ONLY TWO MINUTES walk from my work.  I can now sleep in for  20 minutes because I don't need to detour to Brother Baba Budan on the way to work anymore.  They normally have three different types of beans in their grinders: different single origin coffee, guest blend and the house blend. They make great coffee most of the time and knock my socks off every now and then.  I had a Bonsoy long mac made with Market Lane Seasonal Blend there and it was the best espresso coffee I've ever had.  They also serve pour-over and cold drip coffee .  I tried one when they were testing the recipe and it was pretty awesome.

(I normally use my Keepcup, don't hate me, Captain Planet.)

Eclipse
60/470 Flinders Ln, Melbourne

Awesome people at Eclipse told me they also have a little sister called Little Wish (See The Real Melbourne's review here).  What they offer are pretty much the same as the sister cafe but they have an awesome looking SLAYER espresso machine!

I had a very delicious Santa Babara and Kenya Gethumbwini (both single origin beans are from Market Lane) on pour-over there.

Little Wish
530 Little Collins St, Melbourne
(It is very hard to find as they don't have any signs at all. Entry via Exchange Tower main entrance, walk pass all the fast food joints and news agency, look right.)

For the "Latte-Sipping Carbon-Neutral Bleeding Hearts", the one-year-old lacto vegetarian cafe Monk Bodhi Dharma in Balaclava is the best choice. They serve top-notch coffee and amaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaazing vegan-friendly gluten-free food. (We blogged about it twice before our blog turned gluten-free and once afterward)

I highly recommend their delicate hand crafted pour-over coffee. The beautiful aromas and flavours are very complex and change when it cooled down. The best pour-over I've ever had.

Back to the northside, you can't really go past Proud Mary for some mind blowing specialty coffee action.  I have tried their flawless Soy Latte, syphon and cold drip. The cafe is pretty big but it is pretty hard to get a table as they are full of Hipsters and 4WDers from other side of the river.

If you like a good syphon and cold drip, try them at Proud Mary.

I really need to wrap it up here or I will never finish this post.  I might do another blog post about the Fantastic Market Lane after I try out the coffee from Cup Of Turth, Dancing Goat and Dead Man Espresso and other Melbourne specialty cafes.

Trippy Taco 2

Remember back in July last year when I announced that Trippy Taco was my favourite cafe? Well it still is but I haven't been back much since we purchased a tortilla press and started making my own corn tortillas. I think I actually prefer out tofu tacos but their black bean tacos are definitely superior. This time though we both decided to go with the combination of tofu and taco filling which is a winner. I didn't realise that you could have both, why didn't anyone tell me earlier? I had their corn tacos, look at all that salad, surely they are healthy:

Whereas, Toby had the wheat based large burrito:

And because the tacos didn't fill me up, we shared some trippy fries. These are perhaps my favourite fries. I can't resist their spices, mostly smoked paprika I suspect.

For other reviews check out easy as vegan pie, vegan about town, vegan and vegematirian.

Gasometer Hotel, Collingwood

Disclaimer: The photos are pretty shitty because we didn't have our proper camera and I hate taking flash photo in restaurants.

East Brunswick Club has been looking after Melbourne vegans' pub meal craving for a few years. We love EBC for their one and only vegan parma, 'cheese burger', '
Philly Cheese Steak' and decadent vegan desserts. EBC is probably the only pub in the world that you can eat a vegan parma while listening to The Feelies' Crazy Rhythm.

So, when Kody (ex-EBC's manager) announced on Mess+Noise that his partner and him were starting a new vegan-friendly pub in Collingwood and posted the menu, I was very excited. The premise used to be the well-known Irish Pub
Father Flanagan's and was renamed Gasometer, the building's original name in the 1800s.

Last Wednesday, K and I went there for dinner. We were welcomed by Kody's friendly smile when we stepped inside. It wasn't as packed (and not as many punks in black) as EBC but pretty busy for a new pub/restaurant on a weeknight.

There are many vegan options on the menu: stuffed fried olives (with vegan roasted pepper cheese, Spanish style mushrooms, smoked tofu strips with spicy buffalo sauce, areapas with shredded red chilli seiten, vegan chorizo burger, vegan mac and cheese, Spanish roasted pepper salad, seasonal sauteed greens and
vegan pumpkin pie. I overheard the V word from both tables next to us. It doesn't take vegans long to catch on to new vegan friendly places.

K and I wanted to try as many dishes as we could but we only have two bellies. K dislikes mushrooms and olives, so we have smoked tofu strips with spicy Buffalo sauce($12) for entree:

There were two options on the menu: spicy or "brutal"(!!!!!) but they made it mild for me (wuss). I liked it a lot but K wished it was spicier (my bad). The house made ranch dipping sauce got the thumbs up from both of us.

Following up was vegan chorizo burger($15) :

The Chorizo pattie was easily the best vegan pattie I've ever had, served with yummy roasted capscium, fried onion and chimichurri aioli. We also liked the perfectly crispy chips a lot. It was almost like they were battered.

We also shared a bowl of vegan mac and cheese ($8):

it was a little bland for my liking and K thought it is not creamy enough.

We saved enough room for dessert and ordered
the vegan pumpkin pie with gingerbread vegan ice-cream ($12):

We were not too sure about the pumpkin pie. We only had pumpkin pie once before last Wednesday night and could not get over the idea of pumpkin in dessert. I guess it is an acquired taste.

On the other hand, we both loved gingerbread vegan ice-cream a lot. I wish I can have a big bowl of it. By big, I mean a pint.

Both K and I liked the food would love to go back and try the
other dishes, especially the seitan dish. I am very happy that we now have one more vegan-friendly pub. It kinda of reminded me of our visit Yulli's in Sydney with Cindy and Michael, a hip gastropub with good beers.

For the coeliacs,
gluten-free options are not available at the moment but I heard that they are working on it and there will be a few g/f dishes and a vegan g/f dish!

Edited to add: there are now g/f options on the menu, see the comment from Annalee for more details

My fav cafe...

is Trippy Taco

I think it was my fav place before I went gluten free, but one I started eating gluten free my passion for it just grew and grew. It is really is an injustice that we haven't blogged about it yet, considering how much we eat there. Although, part of me didn't want more people going there, it's too busy as it is.

It's a small veg mexican cafe (although it did have a brief period of serving chicken) with about half dozen tables inside, and 2 small tables outside. It always seems to be packed, with a regular flow of take away customers too. So it might not be the best choice if you want food fast.

And what's not to like? It's cheap-ish, super vegan and gluten free friendly, tasty, kind of healthy, filling and there are board games to play with while you wait.

So what's g/f? The tacos, fries, nachos, and I think their quesadillas and possibly one other dish. Most of the dishes can be made vegan by replacing the cheese with cheezly.

I'm addicted to their tacos, with super yummy soft corn tortillas, the best tortillas I have tasted, yes better than mamasita in my opinion although Toby would disagree. You can choose from black bean or tofu fillings with the tacos and burritos. I generally get the black bean filling, because it's so rare to have a black bean option in Melbourne and also we don't have canned black beans in supermarkets here for some reason. But the tofu ones are just as delicious, with grilled spiced tofu. It comes with cheezly, avocado, lime, tomatoes and various forms of lettuce. For around $9.50 (with the cheezly surcharge) they really are good value for money and fill me up quite nicely.

When I'm feeling super hungry though, or just in the mood for fast food, I can't resist sharing their fries which are covered in salt and some sort of addictive spice combo, I can only pinpoint the obvious paprika and perhaps a tiny bit of chilli. They kind of remind me of nandos fries which are vegan but not g/f. Toby and I have tried replicating them at home but haven't managed to come close.
Toby however is a big eater, so generally orders the wheat based burrito. I've had it in pre g/f days and agree that's is more filling but flavour wise not as nice as the corn based tacos.

They also have a few vegan options for dessert like a sweet corn tamale but my latest obsession is going to Trippy for dinner and then getting a few take away choc peanut butter g/f cookies from las vegan cafe, which is only a few doors down. Both place are pretty close to vegan wares too, if you want to get some vegan shoes while you are in the area.

Las Vegan has Gluten Free Desserts

Toby and I have gone to Las vegan twice in the fortnight. Both times on Thursday nights, and each time it has been busy. Go Las vegan!!!

There are a few different g/f main options but I always get the rice balls minus bean sprouts because apparently you shouldn't eat bean sprouts when you are having traditional chinese medicine. It comes with lots of salad, two massive rice balls with yummy satay sauce and plenty of coriander. It is delicious and healthy (if you ignore the fact that the rice balls are probably deep fried) and super filling. Toby always finishes it for me.

Toby had the sweet and sour "chicken" which comes with tofu, veggies, rice and a coleslaw type salad. Toby said it is not exactly as tangy as chinese take out version but is probably healthier. His regular favourite dish though is the sloppy joe burger.

But the exciting thing is that there are now g/f sweets. There are red velvet cupcakes which are were sweet and moist with icing that perhaps had a tiny bit of cream cheese in it. The cupcake itself is quite red.
My fav though was the chocolate peanut butter cookies which has peanut butter filling in the inside. These are amazing.

They also have other vegan gluteny desserts like vanilla slice and chocolate cookies. The profits of some sweets like the regular cookies goes to edgars mission.

Monsieur truffle, I have expensive taste

Monsieur Truffle is just around the corner from my work which is very dangerous because if I feel that I really need chocolate it is just a little bit too close and at $10 a bar it is the most expensive chocolate I have ever purchased.

Unfortunately I am slowly becoming addicted to there chocolate. I have been slowly trying their different flavoured chocolate bars, caramelised almond, hazelnut etc. The caramel specks is probably my favourite, with crisp caramel bits, maybe it is because I haven't seen another dark chocolate caramel bar that is vegan:

I tried to get an inside shot but struggled because apparently button likes the chocolate too
My only problem is I still eat it like it is regular chocolate, consuming a bar in 1-2 days. Yes I need an intervention!

They also sell dark chocolate almond clusters, a whole range of exotic dark chocolate bars and rich dark chocolate flakes to make an incredible rich hot chocolate. Most of their dark chocolate options appear to be vegan!

Monsieur Truffle Chocolate
90 Smith St
Collingwood
9416 3101
Open: Mon-Fri 8am-5pm;
Sat 9am-5pm; Sun 10am-5pm

It's almost the end of Aus/NZ Vegan Mofo (Month of food) and I'm pretty proud of my increase in number of posts but it will probably mean that I will need to decrease my posts in October and spend a little more time on my neglected thesis. I've really enjoyed the experience though, I think it helped me to get out of my food slump.
